NYC’s downtown Caribbean food spot/store/radio station of choice, Miss Lily’s, has teamed up with film producer Maxine Walters, to showcase her unrivalled collection of hand-painted Jamaican dancehall signs in a brand new book. These signs, advertising dances from Bass Odyssey to Stone Love, are everywhere in Jamaica, yet little celebrated (though clearly influenced the work of Robin Clare). Collected by Walters since 2001 by means of a few renegade tactics, the signs are artifacts in dancehall history that have seemingly never been documented before. Alongside high-res photographs of the colourful and often raw signs, the book also features an interview with Walters on the significance, aesthetics & the history of the signs.
The collection is currently being exhibited in Miss Lily’s until Oct 24th. No news of UK distribution yet, but you can grab it from the Miss Lily’s online store in the meantime for just $20.
